  • I recently travelled up to Parkside Motors Yorkshire to purchase a Nissan Qashqai from "Stan" the owner of the garage. After a brief discussion over the phone to ensure that the car was still available before making the 12 round trip he informed me that it was. A known fault with Nissan Qashqai's seems to be the suspension, before finishing the call I made sure to ask Stan if the suspension was in good condition with no issues. He proceeded to tell me this was all in order and a well looked after car.
So we made the trip. Upon first inspection the car seemed in brilliant condition, the paintwork was good for its age, the inside was well presented - there was a bit of mould but the car had been sat there a while, understandable we thought. My old man (having more experience with cars than myself) took the car out for a short round the block test drive accompanied by the owners son. All seemed well so we decided to purchase the vehicle and get on our 6 hour return trip back to Plymouth. Around two hours into the return drive the steering began to rattle, rough ground I thought. So we proceeded another hour before pulling over for some a break. The rattling started to get progressively worse. We decided to switch so my old man could see if there was an issue or me being paranoid; the car was rattling and getting worse. We rang Stan around 4 hours into our journey to inform him that there was an issue. He insured us that it would be nothing but the wheels needing tracking and to get it to our local garage when we got back. Brilliant, not what we wanted but at least Stan has the right idea and will help us with our issue. We got it to our local garage that night - a Saturday. The car got looked at the following morning. The drive shaft had cracked causing the rattling, upon further inspection the rear passenger suspension had rusted so bad it had fist size holes in making the car unroadworthy. The rear break calliper had also seized due to rust and needed to be replaced to stop the breaks wearing unevenly. But how? The car had just passed an MOT two weeks prior with no pick ups or worries for concern. We got a second opinion from another local garage who again was in disbelief that we had managed to get the car back safely, let alone passing an MOT. We called Stan to inform him that the driveshaft would need replacing even if we were to return the car for a refund. Stan proceeded to ensure us that it wasn't the driveshaft it was the tracking (after two separate garages checking the car over). Upon going forwards and back with Stan, he insisted he would not be covering the cost of this and the 3 month warranty bought with the car was useless. Okay, so were at a loss here. What can we do with regards to the suspension? We spoke to Stan who reluctantly said he would pay to have the parts shipped down to us and would pay a garage £40 maximum an hour to fit these parts. - trade prices which we are not traders unfortunately, another out of pocket expense. A couple days go by we call Stan to see when the parts are coming, he has now decided he cannot get them to us but will give us £300 towards the £450 suspension bill and nothing towards the drive shaft £320 bill or rear calliper, leaving me, my pregnant wife without a car for 3 weeks and an unexpected £550 bill to pick up.
I would never deal with Stan or Parkside Motors again and if you are brave enough to, this is the sort of car you'll be picking up.
